We recently drove 35 miles in a severe thunderstorm that included hail to purchase a 4Runner. We walked in the door soggy and frazzled from our tension-filled drive. Upon entering the showroom, we were greeted by the very sweet and personable Melissa Louissaint and immediately felt at ease. She assured us we would be well taken care of and she delivered. Melissa tirelessly worked with us and never lost her sunny disposition on one the the summer's stormiest days. It was one of the most pleasant experiences I've had in my 40-plus years of car buying. SALES REVIEW: My sales person was Miriam Shanken. Initially, I signed a contract & put a $2,000 deposit down on a beige Camry, but the next day, I questioned my decision thinking this midsize car was too big for me. I work in the Bronx & parking sucks. I must have looked at 3 other cars & the deposit was non-refundable so I was stuck. Miriam was very patient with me & while she might have been annoyed with the situation, she never showed it. So I took the plunge & bought my 2017 Certified Toyota Camry in white a month ago, which I LOVE. PROBLEM: The ad online for my car listed a $50 deductible but Miriam told me it would be $0. This is before I signed my contract. When i went back to pick up my car, I sat down with Steve Escobar (finance) who discussed the coverage with me stating I would pay $0. I received my warranty card in the mail: "$50 deductible, but $50 may be waived with a purchase of a VSA." I visited the dealership to pick up my plates & talked to a manager named Samuel who said the $50 was set by Toyota. I obviously know that, but that's not what Miriam told me. I flagged Miriam down outside & she said "no no you won't pay anything, I'll talk to Steve & then figure out to get something written up for you. I'm already clocked out so I can't do it right now. I'll reach out to you tomorrow." The next day, I text her & she tells me Samuel told her there is a deductible & that she & I already discussed that. Except, we didn't. Let's be logical here. I have NO problem paying it, after-all, the ad online DOES say $50! It's the PRINCIPLE here, don't lie. Own up to your mistakes. I spoke with the Certified Used Car Manager, Jay Kim at 11:47 am the next day, July 2nd who would investigate & call me back that day. NEVER GOT A CALL BACK. The next day I called & asked to be transferred to his line but the phone mysteriously cut off twice. I had to drive 20 miles to the dealership just to speak with someone in person. I spoke with Jay who told me he did not get a chance to even discuss the issue with his staff because he was helping a client until 8pm the previous day. So in other words, this issue would never have been resolved if I hadn't shown up. Guys are you paying attention? Jay, didn't say much except that he couldn't comment because he was not apart of the discussion. I asked to speak with Steve who explained I did not purchase the VSA & he never mentioned not paying the deductible. I began to ask more questions because I was genuinely confused here. His tone changed & he became aggressive. He never raised his voice but he kept repeating the same thing with his eyebrows flaring up & down & his head cocked to the side, repeating, "so what's the problem? What's the problem?," very condescending. A different temperament than our first conversation where he spoke about his wife wanting to visit the famous pizza shop in West Orange after moving to Jersey. Now everyone makes mistakes. It's possible I could have misunderstood Steve during our initial conversation at the signing. But trust me when I say, Miriam told me I would pay $0 deductible. Check out her text message where she says her boss informed her of the deductible "yesterday". But the car was purchased 1 month ago. I work in healthcare & sometimes I have to call my patients back to apologize for their negative experience & whether or not I agree with them is irrelevant. I would have been fine if someone had said, "Listen, I'm sorry. I misspoke. I thought it was waived in this case, but it's not & I'm sorry about the confusion..." Sometimes you have to pacify people to diffuse a situation. Customer service is seriously lacking at this establishment. There's no genuine concern for any issues that arise & they don't care about resolving them, no matter how small they are. There is no integrity, no compassion, no apologies & no accountability. I do not regret buying my car here though and I hope there are no problems down the line. FEES: Documentary Fee: $449, Mandatory Total Loss Protection (TLP) is $389, NJ Sales Tax & Registration/Title Fee. Non-refundable deposit. No exchange after purchase like other dealerships.
